Getting Noticed
Here are a few tips taken from the Kick Butts Day 2012 guide to help your events get noticed in your community!
Why is media attention so important?
Media coverage can:
-
Publicize your event so more people will be there to support it.
-
Educate thousands of people about your issue and your message.
-
Inspire more people to follow your lead and get involved in taking on tobacco companies.
-
Attract the attention of public officials who determine tobacco-control policies.
How do I start?
-
Develop your message: Why are you doing your event?
-
Choose your media contacts and get in touch with them.
-
Grab reporters' attention with media advisories, media alerts, press releases, press kits and more: Develop written materials so you’re prepared when the press asks for more information. This could include quotes in your press release, facts about the specific issue and examples of how this problem affects your community.
-
Make your activity eye-catching to attract crowds and cameras: Think about the types of news stories that everyone likes, or YouTube videos that go viral. Try to add these elements to your event. The more people who see it — the more successful it will be!
